DIY Double Glazing

By Francis Thames

The process in which a translucent glaze is added to door or window glasses is called glazing. Its main purpose is to add insulation and protection against heat or cold. Glazing is indeed very useful during the summer and winter seasons. Double glazing, on the other hand, refers to the process of adding two panes of glass with a space in between to reduce the heat and noise coming from the outside.

Nevertheless, even if there are lots of people you can hire to do the job, it is still better to do glazing yourself. The procedures are not very hard to do. In fact, you can easily complete the entire process if you have the right tools.
* First, you need to prepare the things that you need. Go to the hardware store and buy glaze. Look for a brand that is reliable and affordable. Check if it is safe and easy to use. Buy the other needed materials, as well.

* Take the door or window glass you need to glaze out of its frame. Doing so will make it easier for you to place it in one place.

* If you see that the glass has been glazed before, take off the old glaze using a scraper or a blowtorch. When using the blowtorch, set it on the lowest heat setting. You must also be careful because heat can damage the glass and frame permanently. This is especially true if the frame is made from wood. The glass has to be smooth and clean before you can apply new glaze on it.

* Next, you have to prime the wood for glazing so it will not absorb even a small amount of oil during the glazing process. Also, keep in mind that the primer is a bit slow to dry. So, you may need to wait for about twenty-four hours before you can move on to the other steps.

* Once the primer has dried, you can proceed to glazing. Follow the given directions carefully, so you can be sure that the glaze will not come off easily in just a couple of years. It has to be durable and long-lasting, so you can admire your glazed door or windows for years.

* You also need to let the glaze dry properly unless you want the glass to get damaged. If you put the glass back in its frame without allowing the glaze to dry completely, expect the heat and cold to get to it.

Cheap double glazing is fun, easy, and rewarding. You can ask help from a professional, however, if you really are having difficulty with the process.

In addition, you may want to make use of a vibrating alarm watch to help you organize your schedule. The entire glazing process may take a while, and you will surely not want to neglect your other tasks. So, this device may really come in handy.
